Drugs can be very addictive. Apart from Alcohol and Nicotine
based substances these are the most common and most addictive types of
drugs. While many factors determine whether or not you’ll get addicted
to drugs, the risks associated with getting addicted to some drugs is
higher than others. The reason is drugs have varying degrees of
addictiveness where some drugs can have you hooked after just the first
try while others may take awhile to become addicted to. In my personal
opinion, I think it depends from person to person too.
Heroin’s ability to quickly penetrate the brain, results in the surge of intense euphoria or the “rush” heroin addicts experience. It activates your brain’s reward system and essentially tricks the brain into halting the production of reward feelings on its own, so that after a time, the user cannot experience any good feelings without the aid of the drug. This is why heroin users experience intense drug cravings when the drug is stopped.
Cocaine is a crystalline tropane alkaloid that is obtained from the leaves of the coca plant. It is both a stimulant of the central nervous system and an appetite suppressant, giving rise to what has been described as a euphoric sense of happiness and increased energy. Its effects can last from 20 minutes to several hours, depending upon the dosage of cocaine taken, purity, and method of administration.
Methamphetamine imitates two important chemicals in the brain which are dopamine and norepinephrine, the neurotransmitter responsible for feelings of alertness and energy. Meth can release as much as 10 times the normal level of dopamine, and the excess of artificial norepinephrine suppresses natural adrenaline production messing up the chemical balance in the brain.
Although crack cocaine and powder cocaine have similar chemical compositions and effects, smoking processed crack causes a faster, higher rush that lasts for less time (about 10 minutes, versus 15-30 for powder cocaine). The intensity of the high combined with the efficient method of ingestion smoking are the main reason why addiction rates are higher for crack than they are for snorted powder.
By altering how the neurotransmitter serotonin works in the brain and affecting other brain functions, LSD can cause users to experience hallucinations. Shifts in emotions that occur so rapidly some users report that they seem to experience several emotions at the same time. The long-term effects of using LSD can include persistent psychosis (disorganized thinking, hallucinations) and flashbacks.
MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine) is an empathogenic drug of the phenethylamine and amphetamine classes of drugs. MDMA has become widely known as “ecstasy” (shortened to “E”, “X”, or “XTC”). It has become a popular drug, because of the positive effects that a person may experience within an hour or so after taking a single dose. Effects include feelings of mental stimulation, emotional warmth, empathy toward others, a general sense of well being, and decreased anxiety.
Opium is a highly addictive narcotic drug acquired in the dried latex form from the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) seed pod. The user will feel sleepy, drowsy or relaxed similar to the feelings that come from alcohol. These short term effects will differ for each individual and they may be mild to moderate or they could be very intense if a lot of opium is smoked or if an opium derivative is used.

It is a dissociative drug formerly used as an anesthetic agent, exhibiting hallucinogenic and neurotoxic effects.
